Scouting Ireland / Irish Air Corps 100th Anniversary Badge Challenge

Welcome to the Air Adventure Team and Irish Air Corps 100th Anniversary Badge challenge. The Air Team have partnered with the IAC to mark this major milestone and to highlight the many services the Irish Air Corps (IAC) provide to our communities across the country.

If you’re not familiar with the IAC have a look at this video which explains some of the roles they play from air ambulance missions, supporting the Coast Guard, transporting COVID tests or crewing the Garda helicopter:

The challenge is for your lodge, six, patrol or crew is to research and present how the Irish Air Corps has been active in your community over the past 100 years.  We’re giving scouters the opportunity to pick a project that suits your youth members and although we’ve provided some suggestions below, it’s completely up to you how you approach the challenge.

Once you’ve decided what you’re going to do, get cracking with your team and then send us in a quick summary of what you’ve done to airactivities@scouts.ie .  Your submission can be photos, videos or any other format you’d like.  We will select one winning lodge, six, patrol and crew (so four in total) along with their scouters who will be invited to a VIP day hosted by the Irish Air Corps at their home base in Baldonnell. You’ll get a behind the scenes tour of the aircraft and operations and a chance to meet some of the IAC team.

Entries need to be submitted by 30th July, winners will be announced at the Iolar Challenge (2-4 September) and the VIP tour will take place over October mid-term.

Badges will begin shipping in early May and can be purchased online here:

The project is completely at your discretion within the theme of “How the Irish Air Corps has been active in your community over the past 100 years”.  The suggestions below are purely that – let your imagination loose and come up with your own unique take on the challenge! We look forward to seeing your fantastic ideas, so don’t be limited by our suggestions!

Sample projects:

  • What aircraft have the IAC used over the last 100 years?
  • How has IAC service to your community changed over the last 100 years?
  • How may people does it take to support a single mission and what are their roles?
  • Make a model of an IAC aircraft or helicopter
  • Interview a member of the IAC from your community and talk to them about their role
  • Pick a role in the IAC and find out what training is involved in the role
  • Pick a community support service provided by the IAC and consider what it might mean to the people that have been helped by the IAC.
  • Draw / colour a model of the IAC fleet.
  • Research why the IAC base is at Baldonnell and it’s history

Best of luck in your challenges and we are really looking forward to meeting some of you in Baldonnell.
